South Shores Cashless Cafeteria System

Cafeteria
Breakfast and lunch are served daily in the South Shores Cafeteria. The
South Shores Cafeteria uses a cashless card system for all students purchasing breakfast or lunch. Every student is issued a card. Free lunch recipients are credited for their meals throughout the year once the application has been processed and approved. Reduced and full-pay students MUST deposit money in their card account each year. We will notify your child when he/she has exhausted the funds in his/her account. Meals will not be served to students who do not have enough funds in their accounts this year until a deposit is made. However, students will receive milk and fruit. The school provides a neck strap so students can wear their scan card and hopefully avoid losing the card.

Breakfast: Full price $ .60, Reduced price $ free
Lunch: Full price $1.00, Reduced price $ .40

South Shores Magnet Fidelity Guidelines

2006-2007

I. Program Overview:

South Shores Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts was founded in 1979-1980. When the school was developed, a partnership was established with California State University, Dominguez Hills and the school name became South Shores/CSUDH Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts. Initially, the Magnet School covered grades 1-6 and resident students comprised the Kindergarten program. Several years ago, sixth graders were transferred to the Middle School and South Shores was established as a K-5 school, again, with the Magnet School population covering Grades 1-5.

II. Educational Philosophy:

South Shores is one of the only full magnet schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District that emphasizes the visual and performing arts. We provide our students with an enriched academic program that is integrated with the visual and performing arts. Time is allocated so all students are exposed to the full spectrum of the arts.

III. Differentiated Objectives of the Program:

Our arts program has become standards based and as one of the Arts Prototype Schools in the district, we are incorporating all the visual and performing arts in all the grade levels. In our third-fifth grades, children participate in two different arts mini-classes during the fall semester. They take one visual arts class and one performing arts class. By the time the student leaves South Shores at the end of the fifth grade, he/she will have taken music, dance, and drama as well as two years of visual arts fundamentals.

IV. Expectations of Student Performance:

Students are successful at South Shores when they take full advantage of the types of arts programs available to them. For success, we expect our students to perform academically at grade level. We provide a solid foundation and are among the top API performers each year for the Los Angeles Unified School District. To ensure that no child is left behind, we provide for the specific needs of all students.

V. Multicultural Activities/Curriculum:

All classrooms at South Shores are integrated and to the best of our ability conform to the court mandated 60% Minority, 40% Anglo population. As such, students thrive on integration on a daily basis. Special programs developed by our staff such as Cultural Day, provide an insight into the many cultural experiences and backgrounds of our students. Through programs from the Music Center, local community arts organizations provide programs for our students and teachers through the DATE materials incorporate multicultural activities in their classrooms on a regular basis throughout the school year.

VI. Special Curriculum:

Arts instruction is incorporated in all thematic units in the class setting. Through our staff development and special workshops, the arts are an integral part of our instructional program.

VII. Special Enrichment Activities:

During the school year, both our primary and our upper-grade departments plan and implement a theatrical production that involves all students at South Shores. Our primary department (grades 1-2) develops a theme and creates a musical play that presents the theme in dance, song, and drama. With the use of art backdrops, sets, and props, all students are able to participate in this presentation.

The 3rd students participate in guided learning with an emphasis on the third grade visual arts standards. Each 3rd grade class participates in a culminating Art Show to showcase their completed work.

Our upper-grades (4-5) participate in this production either on the stage or behind the scenes. Students are responsible for building sets, props, applying make-up, singing, dancing, acting, and theater management.

VIII. Parents and Community Involvement:

The parents and community are actively involved at South Shores. South Shores thrives with an abundance of school volunteers and a very active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The PTO contributes significantly to the well being of our learning community and actively participates in School Based Management Committees including our Learn Council and School Site Council. Because of our Magnet status, we are fortunate to have an abundance of community involvement from a plethora of geographic regions.

Magnet School Description

Magnet School Description:

South Shores Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts

South Shores Magnet School for the Visual and Performing Arts is located in the city of San Pedro and draws students from approximately fifty schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. We are at our capacity enrollment of 494 students. South Shores was established as a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School in 1979 and since that date has had an outstanding program in the arts. At its inception, South Shores was partnered with the California State University, Dominguez Hills.

As a Magnet School, our student population was established by court order and was set at 60% minority and 40% white. We have maintained the court order. When staff vacancies occur, we hire teachers who have a strong background and training in one aspect of the visual and/or performing arts.

Our arts program takes on different dimensions in primary and upper grades. In our primary department, all the arts are taught by the classroom teacher and during a specific time period each spring, teachers organize arts mini-classes for students who will benefit with an in-depth knowledge of one of the various arts disciplines. At the end of the year, our primary department performs at a schoolwide performance, which is theme based. Examples in the past have included: The Environment, Oceans (Sea Life), The Wild West, and The Rainforest.

Our upper grade arts program is centered on arts mini-classes. During the Fall Semester, students select through choice and assignment, two arts classes. One class will be visual and the other a performing art. During their two years in the upper grades they will select two visual and two performing arts classes. Examples of mini-classes offered in the past and this current year include Chorus, Music of the Americas, American Folk Music, Tap Dance, Ballet, Advanced Dance, Creative Drama, Art History, Animation, Basic Design, Greek Dancing, and so on. We offer twenty-four different classes during the Fall Semester.

The Spring Semester is devoted to production and 3rd Grade Art Show. Since our inception, South Shores has presented a theatrical production at the University Theater at California State University, Dominguez Hills. The production culminates our Music, Dance, Theater, and Visual Arts Program. Each year, the Spring Production is chosen from a wealth of known children’s literature. In the past several years, our students have performed: Charlotte’s Web, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Peter Pan, Adventures of Mr. Toad, and Wind of a Thousand Tales. We invite over 800 students from elementary schools in the district to view our production each year. This production is student centered. From student director, to actor, dancer, singer, stage crew, set designer, house managers, program designers, and set builders, all students are involved in the production.

We fund our arts programs through various funding sources:

A. Magnet School Budget

B. School Improvement Budget

C. Fundraising through our PTO

D. Donations from Corporations and Local Businesses

Kindergarten Parking

Kindergarten Parking

In an effort to streamline our pick-up and drop-off procedures for our Kindergarten parents, we are establishing the following procedures. In the morning, the Kindergarten class will be picked up by Ms. Bennett at the West Gate (Closest to Kindergarten Yard). Parents are welcome to wait with their children by the west gate. Please pick-up your child at the west gate at 2:40 p.m. as well. Please DO NOT park by the main entrance. Parking near the main entrance causes a very serious traffic problem.

Thank you in advance for making our school safe.
